Lawn Watering Tips: How Much and How Often

Although most folks know the critical role watering grass plays in lawn health and appearance, many don’t know how to go about doing so properly. In this Backyard Smart video, you’ll learn the lawn watering tips—namely, how often and how much water to apply—needed to grow and maintain lush, manicured grass.

How Long to Water

From the tips of its grass blades down to its roots system, all lawns love—and need—hydration. But, knowing how long to water in order to reach that 1- to 1 ½-inch weekly threshold can be a guessing game. An empty tuna can provide a simple solution, however. Simply place on the lawn when you begin watering, and stop once it’s halfway filled. Following this regiment twice a week will ensure your grass is properly hydrated.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to water your lawn deeply (wetting the soil down to about six to eight inches) and thoroughly to create a healthy root system. Watering too quickly—or not deep enough—can shorten your grass’ roots and make it more prone to injury.

Although lawns can be watered year-round, the time of day you choose to water will affect how beautiful and healthy they’ll become. With this in mind, morning is generally the optimal time for watering.
