The key to that signature Exmark cut doesn’t just start with their legendary UltraCut decks—it also begins with the tires. But they don’t control cut quality alone, they impact the productivity, stability, operator experience, and overall health of your mower, too. Join Exmark product manager Lenny Mangnall as he explains everything you need to know about zero-turn tires. So you can keep on perfecting your backyard life, mow after mow.
Pneumatic Tires
As Mangnall explains, pneumatic tires are your basic tire, featuring a rubber shell fed through a valve stem and supported by air pressure. They’re typically the drive tires that come standard on most Exmark models—and every model of the Lazer Z. However, it’s not just the drive tires that are pneumatic. Specific models (like the Quest, Radius, and Lazer Z E-Series) come with pneumatic caster tires, too.
With pneumatic tires, you’re fully dependent on the air pressure in the tire to support and maintain the height of cut, deck level, and rake. Meaning, says Mangnall, that uneven pressure in your tires can result in an uneven cut.
It also goes beyond just a standard, disappointing flat tire—it impacts the overall performance and health of your machine, too. With a flat, you run the risk of a front caster tire lifting off the ground, causing wobble which significantly reduces your machine’s cut quality. And, in case of an untimely impact, this lift can cause some serious damage to the caster fork. Although, when maintained properly, these zero-turn tires continue to deliver that signature Exmark cut, stability, and operator comfort.
Semi-pneumatic Tires
Semi-pneumatic tires also contain air, but they aren’t supported by air pressure itself. So, unlike pneumatic tires, you don’t need to worry about air pressure levels impacting the performance of your machine. Their rubber shell provides all the support; they just contain static air to give them the cushion they need. Ensuring you always receive a consistent height of cut, deck level, and rake.
And, as an added bonus, explains Mangnall, they’re ultra durable. Their built-in support structure prevents flat tires—further improving cut quality, stability, and productivity.
Non-pneumatic Tires
Exmark’s signature Tractus tires provide all the benefits you receive from a well-maintained pneumatic tire, without having to worry about the threat of a flat. Totally airless, all the support Tractus tires receive is mechanical, from the tread band to the webbing itself. Meaning you get consistent air pressure for a consistent ground height—and a consistent quality of cut.
Even better, says Mangnall, they last three to five times longer than a standard pneumatic tire does. And, with a larger contact area, they’re engineered to reduce compaction and improve traction. Making it that much easier to make your lawn look clean and pristine.
