In this episode of our Exmark Original Series, Signature Stories, we travel to the Biloxi, Mississippi to meet David Thompson, owner of Thompson Lawn Care, and hear his landscaping story. David got his start in the industry back in 2003, where he would mow lawns in the evening after getting off work at Kessler Air Force Base. This passion to mow drove him headlong into full-time lawncare shortly after.
Born from Adversity
David’s initial focus was on maintaining high-end waterfront properties, but everything changed when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. In the aftermath, he pivoted his focus on installing sod, removing downed or dying trees, and renovating impacted lawns. It wasn’t until 2007 that Thompson Lawn Care really ramped up, when he moved into contract mowing for condominium and townhouse developments.
Today, Thompson works alongside his girlfriend Angela and his trustworthy two-man crew to maintain a wide range of properties all along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In fact, he personally maintains his high-end waterfront client properties, while his crew maintains the contract properties. It’s this motivation and drive to continue to mow, he says, that helps him earn the respect of his employees, making them work even harder for him in return.
Exmark to the Bone
As a loyal Exmark user since 2004, Thompson says that the quality of his equipment means everything to him. He jokes that he’ll “cheap on the truck” towing his mower, before he “cheaps on the mower” itself. Ultimately, he says there’s nothing more rewarding (and relaxing) than taking a beautiful lawn and putting stripes on it to take it to the next level—especially with a breathtaking view of the Gulf Coast. We couldn’t agree more!
