Q&A: Veteran Homesteader and Outdoors With the Morgans Founder, Mike Morgan

February 7, 2020 by Mike Morgan

Outdoors with the Morgans YouTube channel creator, Mike Morgan, brings a lifetime of rural living experience to Backyard Life as one of our content ambassadors. Whether on his show or in person, Mike loves providing rural homesteading pointers. Whether it’s explaining how to properly operate an array of heavy equipment or enthusiastically sharing his passion for wood cutting, milling, and all things outdoors, Mike is committed to helping others maximize the use and enjoyment of their open spaces.

Backyard Life sat down with Mike for an in-depth look at life behind his popular YouTube channel, Outdoors with the Morgans as well as what living the backyard lifestyle means to him and his family.

Q&A With Mike Morgan

Backyard Life: Tell us a little about yourself—family life and where you live?

Mike Morgan: My wife, Melissa, and I live in western Pennsylvania (where we were both born and raised). We have four children and one grandchild, and three furry companions: two golden retrievers and one cat.

BL: What is unique or special about your property or where you live and film Outdoors with the Morgans?

MM: We live on a large tract of acreage, most of which is wooded and natural. We love that our property gives us so much opportunity to be outdoors. Even though it feels like we live “in the middle of nowhere,” we’re actually fairly close to a populated and commercialized area.

BL: What is unique about rural living?

MM: To us, it’s simply the sense of freedom we get from living this way. We find a lot of joy and satisfaction in being able to do all the things we enjoy in the comfort and convenience of our own property.

BL: And, what’s most challenging about this lifestyle?

MM: I would have to say the weather. Everything we want or need to do—from property maintenance to improvements—is dependent on Mother Nature.

BL: On such a big property, how did you define what spaces to use for backyard lifestyle and what to leave wild?

MM: We just started off with a small backyard and expanded as time allowed and our needs changed. We continue to follow that plan and it seems to be working great for us.

BL: How does where you live support your love for a backyard/outdoor lifestyle?

MM: Since our property is full of Pennsylvania hardwoods and we love cutting firewood and sawing lumber, it makes for the perfect place to call home. And, we’re also able to harvest lots of valuable lumber and firewood simply by cleaning up blow-downs, storm-damaged and dead trees, which is a bonus!

BL: What is the trickiest thing about maintaining your property?

MM: Again, weather and having to work in and around its unpredictable nature.

BL: Can you describe some of the projects you’ve taken on around the property?

MM: We’ve taken on quite a few. But, the three major projects that come to mind would be building our pond, removing acres of invasive species and building a large, elaborate trail system.

BL: What is your favorite backyard improvement or the project that you are most proud of?

MM: I would have to say all of our trails. We use them for hiking and walking our dogs. And, they also provide side-by-side or tractor access to most of the property, which is super helpful when we’re gathering firewood and sawing logs.

BL: Can you fish or hunt on your property?

MM: Absolutely, it’s a primary reason we choose to live where we do! We hunt deer and turkey and fish for largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish in our pond.

BL: What’s your favorite way to spend time on your property?

MM: That’s an easy one: Cutting wood in a snow-covered forest on a cold, clear day!

BL: Favorite meal to throw on the grill? And, are you willing to share the recipe?

MM: We really enjoy hot-coal foil dinners cooked on our fire pit, and the fact that they’re so easy to prepare this way. The only ingredients we use are various ground patty meats, along with some chopped carrots, potatoes, onions and a little salt and pepper. We simply wrap all these ingredients in aluminum foil and place them on hot coals. Then, we flip them once or twice until cooked and, voila: we’ve got a hot, tasty meal!

Q&A: Hunting’s Most Iconic Superstar and Bone Collector Host, Michael Waddell

February 3, 2020 by Michael Waddell

Q&A With Waddell

Michael Waddell is, without question, one of the hunting industry’s most recognizable, and beloved, frontmen. Tracing his small-town southern roots to his rise to stardom as founder of the hit series, Bone Collector, Waddell also describes what backyard life means to him and his family, and how they enjoy it each and every day.

Backyard Life: Tell us a little about yourself: Where you live, family, what you do for work that relates to your love of being outdoors or prioritizing a backyard lifestyle?

Michael Waddell: I was born and raised in the rural town of Booger Bottom, GA, and have always loved everything about a simple life centered around hunting, fishing, family, friends, and southern food like fried chicken, cornbread and collard greens make. Having the ability, through my career, to hone the hunting skills I learned growing up has helped me to better promote the Industry—and the hunting/outdoor culture—I love.

BL: When you’re not on the road for work, what does home life look like?

MW: Although traveling for work keeps me busy, life at home with my wife and our five kids can be even busier. But, it’s in a good way. That said, we love spending time together cooking, riding ATVs, hitting the river in our boat and playing/singing music. (My two oldest boys play the guitar and do most of the singing. I am good enough with music to know that I can’t carry a tune … LOL!!)

BL: Do you ever have time for outdoor projects? If so, what do they usually consist of?

MW: Ever since my wife and I bought a farm four years ago, it seems like we’re constantly in the middle of a project related to the 900 pecan trees that are on the property. Although we’ve learned a lot, we still have so much more to learn. And even though tending to them is hard work, we really enjoy it!

BL: Or, is the focus more on getting your kids out hunting?

MW: Although our kids do hunt, I’ve never pushed them since the opportunity to hunt has always been there. They’ve all grown up around the sport and naturally understand it. They really love to hunt, but in different ways. Even my three-year-old has been out with me several times, and has been part of several successful hunts as a spectator.

BL: Do you have any favorite outdoor/backyard features at your home?

MW: We’ve built a nice archery range on the farm, and have also created several designated areas we use for sighting-in and shooting our guns.

BL: Where do you store all of your gear? Do you have an area to work on all of your hunting stuff at the house, or is it off-site?

MW: We have a great area in our barn to store all of our hunting gear. Bows, arrows, guns, clothes, boots and about every tool known to man. All of our tractors, mowers and farm equipment is stored there, too. It’s like Disney World to us. The whole family would rather be there than just about anywhere else on the property!

BL: What is unique or special to you about rural living in Georgia?

MW: I think what’s most special about rural Georgia living is the simple, slower pace of life. Around here, it’s about campfires, grilling out and telling plenty of stories (some of which are actually even true!). And, what’s unique about this type of living is that it really doesn’t take a whole lot to have a lot of fun!

BL: How does where you live support your love for the outdoor lifestyle?

MW: In the area I live in, most people are just like our family. Most of them hunt and fish, and the ones that don’t still understand and support those of us who do. Case in point: even our local high school has one of the most revered bass fishing teams in the nation. (My oldest son Mason and his fishing partner Cal Culpepper won a state championship and placed 2nd in the national tournament while they were there!)

BL: What is the backyard addition or project that you are most proud of?

MW: Overall, I’d have to say my favorite outdoor addition—and the one I’m most proud of—is my firepit! It’s made to burn hot and is nice and big. So a lot of folks can sit around and enjoy it.

BL: Now, let’s get to the food … what’s your favorite meal to throw on the BBQ?

MW: Being a Georgia pecan farmer, I have plenty of pecan wood at all times. So that helps create some of the best-grilled meats in the world. There’s nothing better than a big ol’ ribeye steak cooked over pecan wood from our trees. For that matter, almost everything cooked over pecan wood is great!

Q&A: Die-Hard Outdoorsman and NASCAR Champion, Austin Dillon

January 30, 2020 by Austin Dillon

NASCAR driver, Austin Dillon, talks about what he loves about rural living when he’s not on the circuit racing.

Backyard Life: Tell us a little about yourself: Where you live, family and what do you for work that relates to your love of being outdoors or prioritizing a backyard lifestyle?

Austin Dillon: My wife, Whitney, our two dogs (French bulldog, Gucci and Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Jake) and I call Welcome, NC home. And, I’m excited to add that we’re expecting our first child in June! We call a fully renovated barn home, and enjoy having fun in and around its confines. That is, when I’m not out on the NASCAR circuit driving the historic number 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet owned by my grandfather, Richard Childress.

BL: You spend a lot of time in the fast lane for work, what makes you prioritize a rural lifestyle when you’re at home?

AD: So, I wouldn’t call it prioritization as much as I would indoctrination. I was raised, and grew up, in the outdoors. And, I still love being outside and enjoying nature to this day. It’s who I am … I guess you could say it’s in my DNA.

BL: What is unique or special about your property or rural living?

AD: Aside from the renovated barn that we live in, it would have to be the woods, fields and ponds adjoining our property. This combination of natural elements makes for a very diverse living area.

BL: Okay, so how did you come to live in a barn?

AD: My dad had the idea to create a barn/apartment that would work as a shop for our race team. And, I ended up enjoying it so much that I bought it from him. I’ve since made some additions to make it livable. It’s been really fun living the barn life!

BL: So, you live and host your show in the barn. But what goes on outside of it? What kind of outdoor living spaces do you have? Where’s your favorite place to be outside at home?

AD: My favorite place to spend time outdoors would definitely be by my pool. In addition, we enjoy hanging out by the fire pit and playing volleyball with our friends on our home court. I also like to run the hill behind my house.

BL: How does where you live support your love for the outdoor lifestyle?

AD: It provides different choices for what I want to do each day. I can either chill out by the lake if I decide to or go spend some time in the woods. I love having these types of options.

BL: Describe your perfect backyard afternoon (or way to spend time in your backyard)?

AD: My dream trifecta would be grilling on the Traeger, swimming in the pool and playing cornhole.

BL: Is the barn a forever thing or are there plans to change it up at some point? If so, will you build on your property and keep the barn?

AD: My wife and I are currently building a new home next to our barn. We’re excited to have some more space, but I just couldn’t give up the barn completely.

BL: Now, for some food talk! What’s your favorite meal to throw on the grill?

AD: That’s a no-brainer: a great steak from Snake River Farm! They taste incredible, due in large part to their intense marbling. They’re used by some of the nation’s best chefs; I’d definitely recommend ordering some online if you’ve never had one.

Q&A: Lifelong Homesteader and Storied Professional Bass Angler, Andy Morgan

January 8, 2020 by Andy Morgan

Pro bass fisherman, Andy Morgan, shares what rural life looks like at home on his 70-acre farm outside of Dayton, Tennessee.

Backyard Life: Tell us a little about yourself.

Andy Morgan: My wife, Missy, daughter, Keylee, and I live with our dog and chickens on a 70-acre farm on the outskirts of Dayton, Tennessee. This is where we both work and play when I’m not hosting a network hunting show or fishing professionally on the FLW—now MLF—Tour.

BL: What is unique or special about your property?

AM: Although we live on a rural Tennessee farm, we’re close enough to all the needed essentials, yet far enough out to enjoy rural living—and the wildlife and activities that go along with it.

BL: With such a big property, how did you define the spaces you would use for backyard living and those you would leave wild?

AM: By intentionally positioning our home on the corner section of the farm just off the roadway, we’re able to utilize acreage directly behind it for backyard life (gathering for cookouts, archery shooting, and just hanging out with family and friends), and the property extending to our back property line is perfect to hunt and farm on.

BL: How does where you live support your love for a backyard/outdoor lifestyle?

AM: It gives us a peaceful, protected place to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort and convenience of our backyard.

BL: What is the trickiest thing about maintaining your backyard/property?

AM: It would definitely be a lack of time. Due to my traveling and our busy home schedules when I am around, there always seem to be too many projects and not enough time to do them.

BL: What is your key to successful backyard upkeep?

AM: Without question, preparation and planning ahead. If you let all the projects that come with living on a farm pile up, you’ll have a real mess on your hands.

BL: What is your favorite backyard improvement/project that you are most proud of?

AM: The backyard archery range we recently added. Although relatively simple to build, it’s helped create a ton of healthy competitions and ‘forever’ memories.

BL: Describe your perfect backyard afternoon (or way to spend time out back)?

AM: That’s an easy one—grilling out and shooting bows with family and friends!

BL: What is your favorite meal to throw on the grill and recipe if you’re up for sharing?

AM: Deer tenderloin and duck breast with a few side fixins is our favorite meal. The secret’s in the marinade, and making sure the meat’s not overcooked. We marinade for at least four hours in Italian dressing, Franks hot sauce, and then add some Allegro ‘Hot and Spicy,’ to taste.

Q&A: Professional Landscape Designer and Done-In-A-Weekend Projects Host, Doug Scott

January 7, 2020 by Exmark

What does Backyard Life look like with Doug Scott, the host of Exmark’s Done-In-A-Weekend Projects series? Here, Scott, the owner of exterior design studio Redeem Your Ground, shares what he loves most about his backyard.

Backyard Life: Tell us a bit about yourself and why a backyard lifestyle is a priority.

Doug Scott: I live in a renovated 1960s ranch that sits on a ¾ acre lot just outside of Atlanta. I live here with my wife Brittany and our two teenaged daughters, a garden cat and small flock of chickens. About six years ago, I left a career in consulting and sales training to pursue my passions and calling to launch Redeem Your Ground—both an exterior design studio and a family, home and garden blog. My hope is that Redeem Your Ground will help families and friends connect with each other and nature outside at home. In other words, I hope to help them redeem their ground, as I have redeemed mine.

BL: What is unique or special about your property, or where you live?
DS: The large mature trees and interesting lot were what sold us on our home initially. So much so that it helped us justify all that it would take to tame the overgrown mess of a yard and to transform the beyond fixer-upper into a home. The lot was interesting to me because, through the classic varieties of shrubs, and under the English Ivy, it seemed to have a sense of history and personality versus your typical cookie-cutter yard. I guess you could say that my property is unique because I saw its potential when most probably couldn’t. And, through it, I was able to create a place that reflects just how my family and I want to live.

BL: What role does your backyard play in contributing to your lifestyle?
DS: Our home, to us, goes beyond its walls and consists of both indoor AND outdoor spaces. So our backyard—and front yard for that matter—is central to my family’s lifestyle. By considering our outdoor spaces as intentionally as we do our indoor spaces, we’re able to more fully utilize what is rightfully ours. As a result, outside the literal walls of our home, we have spaces to play, rest, eat, gather with friends and family or simply be alone, grow plants to eat, grow plants that beautify both our indoor and outdoor spaces, and raise chickens and bees for food and fun. The list goes on and on.

BL: What is the trickiest thing about maintaining your backyard/property?
DS: The trickiest thing about maintaining our property is not letting it get the best of me as is probably the case with anyone, because there’s a lot to do. And that’s all about “working smarter, not harder,” as they say.

BL: What is your key to successful backyard upkeep?
DS: “Maintain by walking around!” When I was in corporate America, there was a management concept called “management by walking around.” This suggests that there’s an inherent value when a manager spends time walking around the workplace in an unstructured manner to engage those they manage. Similarly, I’ve found that if you maintain things little by little when you’re already outside, it helps you stay in front of the 8-ball—pruning here, pruning there, weeding here, weeding there, gathering here, gathering there. Clearly, there will be more work to do, but when you find the time to do it you won’t need to find as much time. The other key to maintaining my yard while still being able to enjoy it is hiring out what I don’t enjoy doing within a budget I can afford.

BL: What is the first step in defining or creating a useful backyard lifestyle area?
DS: The first thing I do with my landscape design clients is to try to get to know them better, to get a better sense of what they want to do outside at home, what cadence they want to have between their indoor and outdoor spaces—to dream a little. Then we talk about those things that could shape and prioritize what they do and when, like views to and from their home, points of access, style preferences, and of course, budget. If they are a DIYer and budget is an issue (as it typically is), I suggest that they try to think of their outdoor spaces like they do the rooms of their home, with paths being the hallways. Then take their outdoor project one room at a time—starting with the room that they look at the most or pass through the most or would most likely get them or their family outside the soonest.

BL: What is your favorite backyard project that you are most proud of?
DS: That’s a tough one. I really do have so many favorites and they’re all so different. But I guess the one that provides us year-round enjoyment and is most unique is our chicken coop and its surrounding area. What was once our side yard—your typical no-man’s-land—has been transformed into our very own little Scott Family Farm!

BL: Describe your favorite way to spend time in your backyard?
DS:
There’s so much I love doing in our backyard, but honestly the most soul-filling time for me is on a cool spring morning with a cup of coffee in hand or just before sunset with a glass of wine in hand, walking through the yard looking at which plants are budding out or emerging from the ground. On second thought, maybe it’s gathering around the fire pit with friends or pushing one of our girls or their friends on one of our three swings. Or, hanging out with our chickens or harvesting some veggies. Or, taking a nap on our hanging daybed or having family dinner outside. Hmmm?
